A small handful of candy, or cereal, pom-poms, buttons or counters, becomes a full set of hands-on math. Children estimate, sort, graph, build patterns and solve problems, and older students stretch into fractions, arrays and word problems.
Candy Counter Math Mats is a hands-on math resource for kindergarten through 3rd grade that uses a small collection of candy, or any manipulative you prefer, to practice estimating, sorting, graphing, patterns, comparing, addition and subtraction. It works especially well after Halloween, when small treats are easy to find.
Food rules vary from school to school, so every mat also works with cereal, pom-poms, buttons, beads or counters. The teacher guide includes a materials list, allergy reminders and no-candy alternatives, which makes the set practical in classrooms with food restrictions.
Younger students begin by estimating and counting, sorting by color and recording data in tally charts, bar graphs to 10 and 20 and a pictograph, then answering Read My Graph questions. Pattern mats cover AB, ABB, ABC, AABB and AAB, and comparison pages introduce more, less and equal along with greater than and less than.
Addition and subtraction come next with a ten frame mat, Make 10, part-part-whole mats, Roll and Add, Take Away and Eat! and Candy Subtraction. Grade 2 and 3 extensions add fractions of a bag, odd and even numbers, arrays and word problems, so the same materials grow with older learners.
A 5-day teaching plan, a Candy Countdown partner game, 12 task cards with a recording sheet, 4 exit tickets, answer keys and a Sweet Math Star certificate complete the 32 black and white PDF pages for centers, guided math, family math nights and homeschool.
