Fall Text Features Passages is a nonfiction reading comprehension resource for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade that teaches students how headings, captions, maps, diagrams, graphs, tables, timelines and glossaries help them understand what they read. The 12 original passages are laid out like real magazine articles, so students practice with pages that feel authentic.
Each passage centers on an autumn topic children find interesting, from honeybees preparing for winter and chipmunks gathering food to the Harvest Moon, the Three Sisters garden, how candy corn is made, Election Day, daylight saving time and wild turkeys. Science, history and civics content gives the reading real substance.
Every passage follows the same pattern. Students first complete a Feature Hunt, then answer questions that require them to use the text features, work through multiple choice comprehension items and finish with a Think & Write written response. The repeated structure lets students focus on thinking instead of directions.
Before the passages, a two-page Text Features Guide introduces 18 nonfiction features with examples, detective bookmarks give students a checklist to keep at hand, and a Name That Feature page offers quick practice. At the end, a Create Your Own Nonfiction Page project with a planner and template lets students design a page using the features they learned.
A teacher plan with a 3-day weekly routine, standards and differentiation tips keeps planning simple, and answer keys are included. The 37 black and white PDF pages suit guided reading, reading centers, small groups, homework, intervention, test prep and homeschool.
