Launch a pumpkin, float a cauldron, drop a ghost and stack a mummy tower. Four Halloween engineering challenges walk students through planning, building, testing and improving with simple classroom materials.
Halloween STEM Challenges is a printable engineering unit for kindergarten through 5th grade. Four seasonal challenges guide students through the Engineering Design Process as they plan, build, test, improve, collect data and reflect, using simple and inexpensive classroom materials.
Each challenge connects to a science idea. The Pumpkin Launcher explores levers, the Ghost Parachute explores air resistance, the Cauldron Boat explores buoyancy and the Mummy Tower explores structural stability. Every challenge includes a teacher guide, a student challenge card, a reflection page and a rubric.
Recording pages are differentiated, so one set serves a whole elementary school. Students in K–2 use a simpler recording sheet, while students in grades 3–5 get separate planning and testing sheets for more detailed data. The Pumpkin Launcher adds a 6-step illustrated build guide and four launch games with mats and a scorecard, and the Ghost Parachute adds ghost templates and a canopy size guide.
Teamwork is built in with an Engineering Design Process poster and team role cards for a Materials Manager, Lead Builder, Timer & Tester and Recorder. A supply checklist and a parent supply letter make gathering materials easier.
The teacher plan offers a Halloween party station option, a 4-week STEM unit, a lesson timeline, grade-level tips and NGSS standards. Four station signs and a STEM Star Engineer Award complete the 46 pages for STEM centers, makerspaces and science lessons.

Why it works
Every challenge follows the same design process, so students learn to test an idea, look at the results and improve it. Separate K–2 and 3–5 pages keep the same challenge fair for younger and older students, and role cards give every team member a real job.
