Description

K–2 Writing Prompts with Picture Word Banks is a 203-page year-long writing resource for kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade. It offers 75 prompts across 25 seasonal and everyday themes, with a narrative, an opinion and an informative prompt for each theme.

Themes follow the school year, from All About Me and Back to School through apples, pumpkins, bats and owls, snow days, polar animals, weather, growing plants, bugs, ponds and frogs, life on the farm, under the sea, camping and summer fun. Each theme begins with a directed drawing, which gives children ideas and vocabulary before they start to write.

Every prompt page includes a picture word bank with five illustrated words, a drawing box, primary lines, a student checklist and a name line. Level A, for kindergarten and 1st grade, adds a sentence starter to trace, a larger picture box and wide lines. Level B, for 1st and 2nd grade, offers genre-specific word helpers and more writing space. Because the layouts match, a whole class can write about the same theme at different levels.

Teaching support includes posters for the three writing types, writing checklist posters, story, opinion and fact graphic organizers, a theme calendar, a prompt index, teacher notes and a weekly writing plan.

For assessment, there are rubrics for narrative, opinion and informative writing, a student writing tracker, self-check strips, a writing folder cover and any-topic templates. Use it for writing centers, journals, morning work, small groups, homework, intervention and homeschool.

Why it works

Young writers often stall because they do not know what to say or how to spell the words they need. A directed drawing, a picture word bank and a sentence starter remove those barriers, and repeating the narrative, opinion and informative pattern across 25 themes builds steady confidence in all three writing types.
