Every student builds a pumpkin that shows one number four ways: standard form on the stem, a place value chart and expanded form on the pumpkin, word form on the leaf. Three games and ten practice pages keep the same skills going all week at 2-, 3- or 4-digit levels.
Pumpkin Place Value Craft & Games is a fall math resource for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade that covers ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. Students show numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form and base-ten models, then compare, order and find 10 or 100 more or less.
The Build-a-Pumpkin Number Craft is the anchor activity. A student draws a number card and builds a pumpkin around it: the stem holds the standard form, the pumpkin holds a place value chart, a base-ten drawing and expanded form, the leaf holds the word form, and a vine tag shows 10 more and 10 less or 100 more and 100 less. Three levels cover 2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit numbers, and a banner turns the finished pumpkins into a class pumpkin patch display.
Three games give partners plenty of practice. Pumpkin Patch Compare works on greater and less than, Roll, Build & Cover comes in three levels, and Pumpkin Path is a race game that adds and subtracts 10 and 100 using a digit spinner and a place spinner.
Two posters, a place value mat and 20 pumpkin digit cards support whole-group teaching. Ten practice pages cover counting base-ten blocks, expanded and word form, digit value, ordering, comparing, more or less and a Where Is the 7? sort, with a quick check assessment to finish.
A 5-day plan with standards and complete answer keys are included. The 35 printer-friendly pages fit math centers, guided math, small groups, homework, review and homeschool in the fall.

Why it works
One number shown four ways on a single craft makes the connections between standard, expanded, word and base-ten form easy to see. Because the craft and the games come in different digit levels, a mixed class can work on the same activity while each student practices the place values they need.
