Description

These community helpers math and literacy centers bring a favorite social studies theme into preschool, Pre-K and kindergarten centers. Fifteen hands-on activities feature firefighters, mail carriers, veterinarians, chefs, librarians, dentists, sanitation workers, doctors, builders and farmers, so children learn about the people in their town while practicing early skills.

Literacy centers focus on sounds and print. Children clip the beginning sound of each picture, clap syllables, sort rhyming words into a garbage truck and read an I Want to Be emergent reader mini book. Helper Word Cards, Trace the Helpers handwriting pages, a Thank You, Helper! writing page and a When I Grow Up journal add vocabulary and early writing.

Math centers cover counting and number sense with Fire Truck ten frame mats from 1 to 10 and Count and Write, early addition with Tooth Addition clip cards, comparing with More or Less Bakery, nonstandard measurement with Measure the Mail and its stamp ruler, data with Vet Count and Graph, and shapes with Shape Fire Truck.

Two more activities connect directly to social studies: Who Uses This Tool? asks children to match tools to the right helper, and Build a Community Map lets them arrange building pieces into a town of their own.

A 2-week center rotation plan, center setup guide, printable center labels, answer keys and a Community Helper Hero Award make setup quick. The 40 pages suit literacy and math centers, morning tubs, small groups, early intervention, independent practice and homeschool.
