Children build a smiling kid tossing autumn leaves into the air, and every leaf in the air is part of a pattern. Along the way they practice AB, AAB, ABB and ABC patterns, cutting and gluing, and finish with a bright fall bulletin board.
The Fall Leaf Pattern Craft is a printable math craftivity for Pre-K, kindergarten and 1st grade that turns pattern practice into an autumn art project. Children assemble a child tossing a pile of leaves into the air, and the falling leaves are glued down to make a repeating pattern.
Four pattern types are covered: AB, AAB, ABB and ABC. Separate templates for each one let you start simple and add complexity, and a write-your-own template invites confident learners to invent a pattern of their own. Sixty leaves in maple, oak and birch shapes give plenty of choices for building and extending patterns.
The craft is also a fine motor workout. Cutting out leaves, arms and heads, then placing them in order, builds hand strength and careful attention. Heads come in three hairstyles and there are six backgrounds, so finished pieces look different from child to child.
Practice pages carry the skill beyond the craft table. A What Is a Pattern? anchor page introduces the idea, What Comes Next? and What Is Missing? offer two levels of challenge, and Finish the Pattern, Color the Pattern and My Pattern Writing give more ways to show understanding. An answer key is included.
A teacher lesson plan, teacher notes, a six-step picture assembly guide and a "Falling for Patterns!" banner make setup quick. The 25 black and white pages suit pattern units, math centers, small groups, independent practice, fall bulletin boards, sub plans and homeschool.

Why it works
Patterns become something children can hold, move and fix, so mistakes are easy to see and correct. The four pattern types and two practice levels let a mixed class work on the same theme while each child is stretched a little.
