Making Inferences Task Cards & Activities is a 26-page reading comprehension resource for 4th, 5th and 6th grade. It teaches students that an inference combines clues from the text with their own background knowledge, and that a strong inference can always be backed up with evidence.
The heart of the set is 32 task cards, printed four to a page. Each card has a short passage and a multiple-choice inference question. Students answer on a quick recording sheet or on Prove It recording sheets, where they write down the clue words that support their choice, so their reasoning is visible rather than guessed at.
Teaching the skill is just as well supported. A 5-day plan lays out the week, and a teacher guide gives a student-friendly definition, a think-aloud script and the common misconceptions to watch for. An anchor chart poster, a sentence stems poster and the It Says / I Say / And So graphic organizer give students a routine they can return to with any text.
Extra activities add variety. Who Am I? and Where Am I? riddles make inferring feel like detective work, and the How Do They Feel? activity uses a word bank to build precise feeling vocabulary for character inferences. Exit tickets check understanding, and the Write Your Own Task Card challenge asks students to plant clues for others.
Answer keys list the clue words for every card. The black-and-white PDF suits reading centers, small groups, SCOOT, intervention, test prep, sub plans and homeschool.
