Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain, Sum it up. Thirty original passages give students steady practice with the RACES strategy, and the support fades over six weeks until they write full paragraphs on their own.
The RACES Writing Strategy unit teaches 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, along with strong 2nd grade writers, to answer reading questions in a complete constructed response paragraph. RACES stands for Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain and Sum it up, and each letter gives students a clear job to do.
The unit follows a gradual release model across six weeks. Lessons 1 through 10 provide a full RACES organizer with sentence stems. Lessons 11 through 20 move to a planning organizer before students write a paragraph. Lessons 21 through 30 ask students to write the paragraph independently.
Every lesson pairs a Read page with a Write page. Students read an original passage with numbered paragraphs, complete a text evidence warm-up and preview the big question before writing. Fifteen fiction passages focus on character traits, character change, problem and solution and theme, and fifteen nonfiction passages cover science, history and how things work.
Four mini-lessons target the steps that trip students up most: restating the question, picking the best evidence, explaining that evidence and fixing a weak paragraph. A race track anchor chart, a model paragraph, sentence stems and student bookmarks keep the strategy visible.
Assessment tools include a student checklist, a self-rubric, a 24-point teacher rubric, class and student progress trackers and model RACES responses for all 30 lessons. The 89 pages fit reading response, writing workshop, test prep, guided reading, centers, small groups and homework.
