Roll and Draw Abstract Art is a printable elements of art game for 1st through 6th grade. Students roll a die to decide what to add next, and three short rounds stack up into one original abstract drawing. Because the dice choose the element and the student chooses how to draw it, every finished piece looks different.
The first game builds the foundation with lines and shapes. The second layers in pattern and texture, and the third brings the work to life with color and value. Along the way, students use real art vocabulary and practice the same elements they will meet in every art unit that follows.
Reference pages keep beginners from getting stuck. An Elements of Art poster names line, shape, form, color, value, texture and space, a Line, Shape and Pattern Library offers ideas to borrow, and a Color and Value page shows a value scale, tint and shade, a color wheel and color schemes. A choice board version means the lesson still runs without dice.
Writing and talking about art are built in too. Students finish with an artist reflection, give classmates feedback during a gallery walk, and can take a short art vocabulary quiz with an answer key. Three sample drawings show what a finished piece might look like and also work as coloring pages.
A lesson plan and teacher guide make this a dependable art sub plan, and the 22 black and white pages also suit art centers, indoor recess, early finishers, enrichment and homeschool art.
