Nutmeg the hedgehog needs a cozy leaf bed before winter, and your students get to tell her story back to you one leaf at a time. The original story comes with the book built in, so you can read, sequence and retell all week without hunting for a picture book.

This fall read-aloud and retell craft gives Pre-K, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classrooms a complete week of story comprehension built around an original illustrated story. "Nutmeg's Leaf Bed" follows Nutmeg the hedgehog as autumn arrives, and the five full-color story pages can be read from print or projected for the whole class.
The centerpiece is the Lift-the-Leaf Hedgehog Craft. Children glue leaf flaps onto a hedgehog, and each flap opens to show one part of the story. Twelve versions let you match the craft to every learner. Nine use First, Next, Then, Last, moving from pasting pictures and drawing to tracing, filling in blanks, pasting sentences, answering questions and writing a full retell. Three more use Beginning, Middle, End for children who need fewer steps.
Story elements and vocabulary get their own attention. Six word cards introduce gather, gust, cozy, tuck, hollow and hibernate, and a story map guides children through characters, setting, problem and solution. Comprehension questions check listening, and three writing pages with toppers carry the story into written responses.
A nonfiction page, Why Do Leaves Fall?, links the fiction story to real fall science, which makes a natural compare-and-discuss lesson. Three coloring pages give quiet follow-up work.
A 5-day lesson plan, a differentiation version guide and a full answer key make planning simple. The 39 printer-friendly pages fit literacy centers, guided reading, small groups, special education, sub plans, homeschool and fall bulletin boards.
