Bats are mammals that fly, see with sound and sleep upside down, which makes them a perfect October science topic. This one-week unit blends reading, science, writing, math and crafts into a little bat book each child can take home.
The All About Bats Unit is a one-week, cross-curricular bat study for PreK, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. It covers the big ideas young learners love about bats: they are mammals, they use echolocation, they live in many kinds of places, they eat different foods, and they grow from pups to adults.
Reading is differentiated from the start. Younger children work with Bat Facts, which uses picture-choice questions and tracing, while 1st and 2nd graders read Amazing Bats, an informational passage with four written-response questions. Eight vocabulary cards introduce words such as nocturnal, roost, colony and nectar.
Science pages ask children to label nine body parts on a bat, sort features in a bats versus birds Venn diagram, match bats to their homes and foods, learn how bats find their way with sound, and put a bat life cycle in order with a cut and paste page.
Writing grows from those facts. A Bats Can, Have, Are organizer collects information, Batty Adjectives builds describing words, and a final prompt about the most amazing thing about bats comes on primary and standard lines. Math and fun pages include counting and graphing, roll and draw, a word search and a maze.
Two crafts finish the week: an I'm Batty About... wing writing craft and a Letter B bat craft. A 1-week plan, a My Bat Book cover, a Bat Expert Award and an answer key are included in these 26 black and white pages for October science, nocturnal animal units, centers and homeschool.
