Read It. Prove It. Write It. Do It! Sixteen short fall nonfiction passages teach first and second graders to point to the exact paragraph that answers a question, then finish with a hands-on science or social studies activity.
Fall Text Evidence Passages is a nonfiction reading comprehension set for 1st and 2nd grade that teaches young readers to find, mark and explain evidence from a text. Instead of answering from memory, students go back and prove their answers.
The set includes 16 original fall passages on science and social studies topics, from why fall days get shorter and what frost is to cranberry bogs, woolly bear caterpillars, hummingbird migration, Diwali and Veterans Day. Each passage is three paragraphs, 90 to 110 words long, with numbered paragraphs so students can name exactly where they found an answer.
Every passage follows one routine: Read It. Prove It. Write It. Do It! Students answer three Prove It! questions, record the paragraph number in a reference box and mark the evidence with a simple black-and-white code. A Write It! paragraph planner moves them from finding evidence to writing about it.
The Do It! step ends each lesson with a hands-on activity such as an observation, an experiment, a craft or a STEM-inspired task, which makes these passages an easy way to integrate science and social studies with close reading.
A 4-week teaching plan, an anchor chart, an evidence code reference, evidence sentence starters and answer keys with paragraph references are included in the 40-page black and white PDF. It works for close reading, guided reading, centers, homework, intervention and sub plans.
