Each mat is one page with a short fall story, a fluency routine, questions and a word hunt, so young readers get a complete reading workout in one sitting. Pumpkins, bats, chipmunks and harvest moons keep October reading feeling seasonal.
These fall reading comprehension passages are one-page reading mats written for 1st grade, with enough support for strong kindergarten readers and enough review for early 2nd graders. Each mat pairs a short original story with fluency, comprehension and word work.
There are 20 mats in all, mixing fiction and nonfiction. Children read about pumpkins, falling leaves, chipmunks, beavers, bats and harvest moons, along with Halloween traditions, fall gardens, woodland animals and autumn adventures. The October and Halloween themes make the set an easy fit for seasonal literacy plans.
Every mat follows the same routine. Students read the passage three times to build fluency, answer comprehension questions on response lines, and go on a word hunt for sight words, short vowels, nouns, verbs or adjectives. Fiction stories end with a sequencing task, while nonfiction stories ask children to draw a fact they learned.
Because the layout repeats, first graders quickly learn what to do and can work more independently. A student fluency tracker lets them see their own progress, and the Fall Reading Star award celebrates the effort.
A 4-week reading study plan and teacher guide map out the month, and answer keys are included. A make-your-own reading mat template invites early finishers to write their own. Use the PDF for guided reading, literacy centers, morning work, intervention, independent reading and homeschool.
