This Halloween read aloud book companion for kindergarten through 3rd grade comes with its own story, so there is no separate book to buy or borrow. The Shadow Who Wanted a Friend is an original illustrated tale about a boy named Theo and his playful shadow Pip, with a gentle, positive message about friendship that suits a not-too-spooky October.
Teacher notes mark discussion stopping points in the 12-page story, and a student mini-book called My Shadow Friend lets children reread at their own pace. Eight reading responses cover making predictions, asking and answering questions, story elements, making connections, character changes, compare and contrast, sequencing and a favorite part.
Every reading response comes in three differentiated levels, which makes the companion practical for guided reading, small groups and mixed K–3 classes. Two crafts reinforce the comprehension work: a Pip story elements flip book and a pumpkin sequencing flip book built around first, next, then and last.
Writing and word work round out the literacy block. Four prompts span narrative, informative, opinion and how-to writing on primary or standard paper, and vocabulary cards, an unscramble, word search, secret code, Make-a-Word challenge and How to Draw Pip directed drawing keep centers busy.
A How Do Shadows Work? mini-lesson adds a simple science connection. With a comprehension check, awards, a 5-day plan and answer keys, the 70-page PDF suits Halloween literacy and sub plans.
