Career Exploration Reading Passages is a 60-page nonfiction reading set for 6th through 12th grade built around twelve unusual real-world jobs. It gives middle school and high school students a reason to read closely while thinking about skills, interests and the world of work.
The careers are grouped into four categories. Dream Jobs include waterslide tester, ice cream flavor developer and video game tester. Strange Jobs feature a golf ball diver, a snake venom extractor and a professional line sitter. Daring Jobs cover smokejumpers, Alaskan crab fishers and wind turbine technicians, and Dirty Jobs introduce whale snot collectors, roadkill collectors and portable toilet technicians.
Each passage comes with two comprehension levels on the same text. Level A uses multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and short response, while Level B asks for written responses, text evidence and answers in complete sentences. That makes the set a practical fit for mixed-ability ELA classes, SPED and ELL support.
Career readiness activities extend the reading: a Job File for every career, a Rate the Jobs page, a "Which Weird Job Fits You?" interest quiz, vocabulary matching, a comparison chart, Would You Rather? discussion cards and a page on the skills each job requires. Students can also read a job ad and complete a job application.
To finish, students design their own weird job using planning pages and a writing rubric. Complete answer keys make it easy to use for CTE, advisory, sub plans, independent practice and homeschool.
